We have been asked to identify any former C&E/RCCS/RCAF Telecom members who are veterans of the Liberation of the Netherlands campaign who would be able to participate in the VAC sponsored 75th anniversary celebrations in May next year. I would ask that anyone who knows of a potential participant to please contact me at [email protected]. I will need notification of any possible nominations by 7 Oct in order to meet VAC deadlines. When considering the nomination of a veteran please pay close attention to the details regarding the health of the individual and demands of participation as noted in the information below. The Government of Canada is planning an overseas commemorative program to mark the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands. An official Government of Canada delegation will travel overseas from approximately May 1 to May 10, 2020, to attend remembrance ceremonies and events at a number of sites in the Netherlands.
If you are aware of any Canadian Liberation of the Netherlands campaign Veterans who would be interested in joining the Government of Canada delegation, I would be pleased to have you nominate them to represent your regimental association. A nomination form is enclosed.
When preparing your nomination(s), please consider your nominee’s level of comfort and ability to share information with others or make informal presentations about their military service.
Although a medical team will accompany the delegation, all delegates must be in good health. Nominees will be asked to have their family physician certify that they are in good health and that they are able to withstand the rigors of travelling overseas. The delegation doctor will also review the medical forms for each nominee to provide final approval.
Delegates will participate in a full schedule of events and days will be tiring. It should also be noted that the majority of events will be held outdoors.
In order for Veterans Affairs Canada to ensure that each Veteran receives the best possible care and support during the trip, Veterans over the age of 80, or those who have a medical condition that requires help with daily living activities, are required to choose a caregiver to accompany them on the trip. The caregiver will assist with such things as getting in and out of the bath/shower, administering medication, pushing wheelchairs, etc. Each Veteran and his or her caregiver will share a room. It is very important to note that the caregiver will be required to remain with the delegate at all times. Additional details regarding the role of the caregiver will be provided to the nominated Veteran. All travelling and living expenses for the Veteran and their caregiver, both in Canada and overseas, will be the responsibility of Veterans Affairs Canada.
Commemorative Event Nomination Form
Le gouvernement du Canada planifie un événement commémoratif à l’étranger afin de souligner le 75e anniversaire de la libération des Pays-Bas. Une délégation officielle du gouvernement du Canada se déplacera du 1er au 10 mai 2020 (dates approximatives) pour assister aux cérémonies et aux activités commémoratives tenues partout aux Pays-Bas.
Si vous connaissez des vétérans canadiens ayant participé à la campagne de libération des Pays-Bas et qui seraient intéressés à se joindre à la délégation du gouvernement du Canada, je vous saurais gré de les nommer pour représenter votre association régimentaire. Vous trouverez ci-joint un formulaire de nomination.
Lorsque vous ferez votre nomination, n’oubliez pas de tenir compte du niveau de confort de la personne et de sa capacité à partager de l’information avec d’autres ou à parler, de façon informelle, de son service militaire.
Bien qu’une équipe médicale accompagnera la délégation, il importe que les membres de la délégation soient en bonne santé. Les vétérans choisis devront obtenir une attestation de leur médecin de famille affirmant qu’ils sont en bonne santé et capables de résister à la fatigue attribuable à des voyages prolongés. Le médecin de la délégation passera en revue les formulaires médicaux de chaque vétéran avant de fournir une approbation finale.
Les délégués participeront à toute une panoplie d’événements et les journées seront très occupées. Prenez aussi note que la majorité des événements auront lieu à l’extérieur.
Afin de permettre à Anciens Combattants Canada de veiller à ce que tous les vétérans reçoivent les meilleurs soins et soutien possibles tout au long du voyage, les vétérans âgés de plus de 80 ans ou qui ont besoin d’aide pour accomplir des tâches quotidiennes en raison d’un problème de santé, doivent choisir un accompagnateur pour les accompagner pendant le voyage. Celui-ci ou celle-ci pourra l’aider, au besoin, pour : son hygiène quotidienne (douche, bain), sa prise de médicaments, sa mobilité (assistance avec fauteuil roulant), etc. Les vétérans et leur accompagnateur devront partager une chambre. Il est important de noter que l’accompagnateur devra demeurer aux côtés du délégué en tout temps. Des détails supplémentaires concernant le rôle d’accompagnateur seront fournis au vétéran choisi. Tous les frais de voyage et de subsistance pour le vétéran et l’accompagnateur seront assumés par Anciens Combattants Canada.
