Originally from Ottawa, Col Dan McKinney joined the CAF in 1998. As a junior officer, he filled various command and staff roles at the Canadian Forces Joint Signal Regiment (CFJSR), the CFB Valcartier Sig Squadron, and Joint Task Force (JTF) 2, as well as technical roles such as assistant researcher at DRDC on Artificial Intelligence, and Systems Engineer for Ground-Based Air Defence (ASCC) and Airspace Coordination Centres (ASCC) at ADM(Mat). 

Promoted to Maj in 2010, he moved to JTF 2’s Future Capability and Integration cell, where he led the Command, Control, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance future capabilities program. In this rank he also served as A/Dept G6 at CA HQ, CO of 5 CMBG HQ & Sig Sqn, and EA to Commander CANSOFCOM.

Promoted to LCol 2017, he led the Intelligence, Surveillance, Target-Acquisition, Reconnaissance (ISTAR), and Electronic Warfare (EW) program at DLGEPM.  From 2019-2021 he commanded the CFJSR, including a tour as CO of the Joint Task Force Support Component for Op LASER, which remained at high readiness during the first year of the pandemic. Prior to his promotion to Col in 2022, he led the team responsible for crafting the CA’s Digital Transformation Strategy while overseeing the evolution of the Land Command Support System.

He is currently Director of Land Command and Information, Army G6, and Director of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals.

He has two operational tours, both in Kandahar, Afghanistan, and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Software Engineering and a Master’s in Defence Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada. He and his wife Andréanne, a recently retired R22R Major, are the proud parents of five energetic young children.
