Capt (Ret’d) Ivan Acorn

IVAN M. ACORN

April 6, 1921 to February 3, 2016

Ivan Acorn slipped away late on the night of February 3rd after almost 95 years. He was predeceased by his wife Kay, daughter Carol, sister Hazel, and parents Perry and Mindy. Survived by his daughter Eva-Jane (Acorn) Lark, son-in-law John Lark and granddaughters Katie and Ruth, his siblings Shirley Hamilton, Glen (and June) Acorn, Gerry (and Bill) Johnson and many nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed.

Ivan was a captain in the Canadian Army Signal Corps and landed on D-Day (dry) and stayed in-theatre until the end of WWII. Returning home, he married Kay, finished university and became a chartered accountant with Clarkson Gordon in Calgary. The family left Calgary for Ottawa when he joined the Government of Canada’s Banking and Accounting department. He “retired” to start a second career with Professional Investments, continuing into his 90s.

Ivan loved his vegetable garden and was an avid square-dancer, round-dancer, and in his 80s, tap dancer. In November 2015, Ivan was awarded the Insignia of Knight in the French National Order of the Legion of Honour.

Many thanks to our family physician, Dr. Ben Syposz, and to the staff and residents of Oakpark Retirement Community for their care and their friendship. Also to the 8th floor (medicine wing) staff at the Ottawa Hospital (General campus) and Dr Coppens and Dr. Sterrett for their kind attention in his final days.

As per his request, there will be no funeral. If you wish to make a donation, please consider the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Alzheimer’s Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Ivan was dearly loved and was a loving friend, father and grandfather. He will always be remembered for his great sense of humour, quick wit, and his upbeat and positive attitude. He was “wonderful”!
