Hiring Veterans in the Government of Canada

On March 31, 2015, the Government of Canada passed an Act to amend the Public Service Employment Act and enhance hiring opportunities for certain serving and former members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). The Act came into force on 1 July 2015 and is known as the Veterans Hiring Act.

The Veterans Hiring Act:

  • Under the provisions of this Act CAF veterans who medically release due to a service-related injury or illness will be given the top level of priority (statutory) consideration for job openings in the public service.
  • The duration of priority access for all medically released CAF members will be extended from two years to five years.
  • Honourably releasing CAF members, who served for a minimum of three years, will have increased access to federal public service job opportunities. These qualified CAF members will be given a “preference” in advertised, external hiring processes for up to five years after their release date.
  • CAF members and veterans meeting the same criteria will be able to participate in advertised, internal hiring processes for up to five years after their release date.
