1. LCOL JIM BATES WILL RETIRE FROM THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES 11 JULY 2019 AFTER 33 YEARS OF SERVICE.

2. JIM ENROLLED IN THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES ON 25 MARCH 1986 AND COMPLETED CELE(AIR) TRAINING AT CANADIAN FORCES SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS AND ELECTRONICS. DURING HIS CAREER HE WAS POSTED TO CFS SYDNEY, 743 COMMUNICATIONS SQUADRON PENHOLD, 707 COMMUNICATIONS SQUADRON NORTH BAY, ADM(MAT) RADAR AND COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS OTTAWA, 4 WING COLD LAKE, JOINT AIR POWER COMPETENCE CENTRE KALKAR GERMANY, 1 CANADIAN AIR DIVISION A6 WINNIPEG, AEROSPACE AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS ENGINEERING SUPPORT SQUADRON TRENTON, NATO COMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION AGENCY BRUSSELS, DEFENCE INFORMATION MANAGEMENT INTEROPERABILITY OTTAWA, AND COMPLETED A TOUR TO BOSNIA.

3. JIM IS GRATEFUL TO HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN AN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DEGREE AT ROYAL MILITARY COLLEGE, A MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION FROM ATHABASCA UNIVERSITY, SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GOVERNOR GENERAL’S CANADIAN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE IN THE YEAR 2000, AND TO ATTEND CANADIAN FORCES COMMAND AND STAFF COLLEGE TORONTO.

4. JIM WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL THOSE WHO HE SERVED WITH AND IS THANKFUL FOR THE WONDERFUL FRIENDSHIPS DEVELOPED OVER HIS 33 YEARS IN UNIFORM. HE IS ESPECIALLY THANKFUL TO HIS WIFE JOSEPHINE AND THEIR CHILDREN FOR THE TREMENDOUS SUPPORT THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER.

5. JIM AND JOSEPHINE WILL REMAIN IN THE OTTAWA AREA WHERE JIM WILL TAKE UP A PUBLIC SERVICE POSITION. DEPART WITH DIGNITY WILL BE KEPT LOW KEY AMONGST HIS SECTION COLLEAGUES AND FAMILY.
