RETIREMENT – MAJ ANTHONY SHIELDS, CD – 00341 SIGS

1. MAJOR ANTHONY SHIELDS WILL RETIRE FROM THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES ON 11 JULY 2022 HAVING COMPLETED 22 YEARS OF LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE.

2. MAJ SHIELDS JOINED THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES IN JUNE 2000 GRADUATING IN 2004 FROM RMC WITH A BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING.  AFTER COMPLETING SIGNALS OFFICER TRAINING IN 2004, HE WAS POSTED EASTWARD TO 5 CMBG HQ & SIGS SQN, LFAA HQ – NOW 5 DIV HQ, BEFORE CULMINATING WITH A TOUR AT MARLANT HEADQUARTERS WHERE HE OVERSAW THE NAVY’S SHIP-TO-SHORE COMMUNICATIONS. WHILE POSTED TO HALIFAX, MAJ SHIELDS COMPLETED TWO TOURS TO AFGHANISTAN, FIRST AS A DUTY OFFICER FOR OP ATHENA ROTO 3 IN 2007, AND A SUBSEQUENT TOUR AS THE REGIONAL COMMAND SOUTH J6 OPS AND PLANS IN 2008-2009. 

SEEKING A CHANGE OF PACE, AND TECHNOLOGY, HE WAS POSTED TO CSOR IN 2012 AND PROMOTED TO MAJOR IN 2013.  SUBSEQUENT POSTINGS TO DG CYBER AND THE NSA EXPOSED HIM TO THE LIMITS OF TECHNOLOGY AND ONCE AGAIN PLACED HIM ON THE ATLANTIC COAST WITH AN OCEAN VIEW.  WITH RESERVATIONS, HE RETURNED TO PETAWAWA AS CO 4 CDSG BEFORE CONCLUDING HIS CAREER WITH WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS GOING TO BE A CALM YEAR AS DJ6 AT CANSOFCOM HQ.

3. TONY IS EXTREMELY GRATEFUL FOR THE EXPERIENCES, ADVENTURES, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY FRIENDSHIPS CHERISHED OVER 22 YEARS OF SERVICE HAVING FULFILLED HIS CHILDHOOD DREAM OF BEING IN THE MILITARY. HE LOOKS FORWARD TO THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPOIL HIS TWO CHILDREN, THOMAS AND FREDERICK, AND SPENDING MORE TIME WITH HIS WIFE ELIZABETH.
