AFTER 22 YEARS (AND TWO DAYS) OF LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO CANADA, THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES (CAF), THE CANADIAN ARMY, AND THE ROYAL CANADIAN CORPS OF SIGNALS, WO JASON TABBERNOR CD WILL RETIRE ON 07 AUG 24. AS A RESULT OF THE 11 SEP 01 ATTACKS, JAY ENROLLED IN THE CAF IN HIS HOMETOWN OF EDMONTON, AB ON 06 AUG 02 AT THE AGE OF 27. HE COMPLETED BASIC TRAINING AT WORKPOINT BARRACKS CFB ESQUIMALT IN NOV 02. HE’S BEEN POSTED TO CFB EDMONTON BEGINNING HIS CAREER IN 1 BDE, OUT TO CFB GAGETOWN TO HAVE HIS SCHOOL TIME, AND BACK TO CFB EDMONTON TO FINISH IN 1 BDE.
  2. AFTER BASIC TRAINING, JAY COMPLETED OJT AND BASIC DRIVER TRAINING AT 1 CMBG HQ AND SIGS, AND THEN PROCEEDED TO KINGSTON ON, WHERE HE FINISHED QL3 SIG OP TRAINING IN OCT 03. HIS FIRST POSTING WAS BACK TO 1 CMBG HQ AND SIGS FROM NOV 03 TO MAR 04. HE WAS THEN ATTACH POSTED TO 1 PPCLI FOR HIS FIRST TOUR TO AFGHANISTAN AS PART OF OP ATHENA ROTO 2 IN KABUL FROM JUL 04 TO FEB 05. THIS WAS A UNIQUE TOUR TASKED TO MAINTAIN STABILITY IN THE REGION AS IT WAS DURING THE COUNTRY’S FIRST DEMOCRATIC ELECTION THAT TOOK PLACE IN THE FALL OF 04. AT THE END OF THE TOUR, JAY RECEIVED HIS FIRST HOOK FROM THE BN CO. UPON COMPLETION OF POST DEPLOYMENT LEAVE, JAY WAS POSTED TO 1 PPCLI AND BEGAN PRE-DEPLOYMENT TRAINING FOR OP ARCHER ROTO 1 AS PART OF TASK FORCE ORION, THE 1 PPCLI BATTLE GROUP WHO STARTED THE COMBAT MISSION IN KANDAHAR FROM JAN TO AUG 06. IN MAY OF 06, JAY WAS AGAIN PROMOTED TO CPL BY A PATRICIA OFFICER. JAY REMAINED AT 1 PPCLI UNTIL JUL OF 09 AFTER RECEIVING HIS APPOINTMENT OF MCPL BY THE BN CO, AND WAS THEN POSTED TO CTC HQ IN CFB GAGETOWN. IN JUL 12, JAY WAS PLACED AT THE INFANTRY SCHOOL AS PART OF A RTW PROGRAM, WHICH TURNED INTO A POSTING AT THE INFANTRY SCHOOL UNTIL JUL 17. DURING HIS TIME AT THE INFANTRY SCHOOL, JAY WORKED AS THE A-COY SIG TAKING CARE OF THE A-FLEET FOR THE SCHOOL, AND UPON HIS PROMOTION TO SGT BY THE SCHOOL COMMANDANT, HE THEN MOVED TO SP COY WHERE HE TOOK OVER AS THE SCHOOL SIGS SGT. JAY HAD THE PRIVILEDGE OF WORKING WITH ALL THREE INFANTRY REGIMENTS ASSISTING ON COURSES RANGING FROM CAP (ALSO KNOWN AS BMOQ-A) BUT MAINTAINED HIS LOVE OF THE PATRICIAS. JAY WENT TO 5 CDSG SIGS AS THE OPS WO FROM AUG 17 TO JUL 18 WHEN HE WAS POSTED BACK TO EDMONTON. FROM AUG 18 TO JUN 19 JAY WORKED AT 3 CDSG SIGS AS THE OPS/TRG NCO, AND WAS POSTED BACK TO 1 PPCLI IN JUL 19. JAY THEN DEPLOYED ON OP IMPACT FROM DEC 19 TO JUN 20. JAY REMAINED AT 1 PPCLI UNTIL HIS PROMOTION TO WO AND MOVED OVER TO LDSH(RC) TO TAKE OVER SIGS TP IN JUL 21. WITH LDSH(RC), AFTER TWO MONTHS IN WAINWRIGHT, HE DEPLOYED TO THE BC FLOODS FROM NOV-DEC 21. IN APR 22, JAY WAS BROUGHT BACK TO 1 SIGS TO TAKE OVER AS OPS WO AND IS REMAINING IN THIS POSITION UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT.
  3. JAY HAS MANY GREAT MEMORIES WHILE SERVING WITH VARIOUS CAF ELEMENTS DURING EXERCISES AND OPERATIONS BOTH IN CANADA AND ABROAD. MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES INCLUDE ALL OF THE INTERNATIONAL DEPLOYMENTS, WORKING WITH ARP AND PATROL PATHFINDERS IN GAGETOWN AT THE INFANTRY SCHOOL, ALL OF THE DOMOPS, ENEMY FORCE FOR JTF2 AND CSOR COMBINED EXERCISE BEFORE THE VANCOUVER WINTER OLYMPICS, DEVELOPING AN SQ AND PATROL CAMP FOR 1 SIGS, AND ALL OF THE EXTENDED MILITARY FRIENDS (WHO HAVE BECOME FAMILY) HE’S MET OVER THE YEARS. HE WILL ALWAYS BE A SOLDIER AT HEART AND WILL ALWAYS CHERISH THE MEMORIES OF THE FALLEN.
  4. JAY AND HIS WIFE HEATHER WILL BE REMAINING IN THE AREA AND ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO EXPLORING MORE OF LIFE ON TWO WHEELS AS LONG AS THE WEATHER PERMITS. HE ALSO PLANS TO FOCUS ON DEDICATING MORE TIME TO THE CHARITIES HE SUPPORTS, INCLUDING THE ONE CLOSEST TO HIS HEART, NO STONE LEFT ALONE. JAY WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLDGE THE LOVING SUPPORT OF HIS WIFE HEATHER, HIS SON RYAN, HIS MOM, DAD, AND STEP-DAD FOR THEIR UNWAIVERING SUPPORT DURING ALL STAGES OF HIS CAREER. HE WOULD NOT HAVE ENJOYED THE SUCCESSES HE’S HAD WITHOUT THEM, AND THE SUPPORT OF ALL OF THE SOLDIERS HE’S WORKED FOR AND WITH OVER THE YEARS.
