On February 27th, 2024, Fort York Armoury in Toronto will host a gathering to pay tribute to the distinguished career of Honorary Colonel Kenneth Lloyd. With a remarkable journey spanning military service, law enforcement, and community leadership, HCol Lloyd’s contributions have left an indelible mark on the Canadian Armed Forces and the wider community.
Military Service: A Legacy of Dedication
Born in 1951 in the United Kingdom, HCol Lloyd’s military journey began in 1972 as an infantry Private in the 5th Battalion, Royal Anglian Regiment. Over his 37-year military career, he rose to the rank of Major, contributing significantly as Commanding Officer of three Signal units and a Dispute Resolution Centre in CFB Petawawa. His service extended internationally, with roles in Germany and Hong Kong, showcasing his commitment to the armed forces.
Law Enforcement Expertise: Border Security to International Crime
In the realm of law enforcement, HCol Lloyd’s resume is equally impressive. Serving in Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise, the Royal Hong Kong Police, and the Investigation Division of Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise, he garnered valuable experience in border security, riot management, and intelligence operations against international drug syndicates.
Educator and Multinational Officer: A Man of Many Talents
With a Masters Degree in Conflict Management, a University Diploma in Family Mediation, and a Certificate in Education, HCol Lloyd’s multifaceted career also includes roles as a qualified teacher and a commissioned officer in both the Canadian and United Kingdom Armed Forces. His leadership as Commanding Officer and subsequent roles in conflict management underscore his commitment to excellence.
Community Leadership and Honors: A Continuing Legacy
Since retirement in 2009, HCol Lloyd has remained actively engaged in military life. As the past President of the Friends of HMCS HAIDA and the Hamilton Signals Association, he has successfully guided these organizations into funded and sustainable charitable entities, with vibrant outreach and education programs like the “Vintage Signals Team.”
Recognition and Awards: A Testimony to Excellence
Kenneth Lloyd’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. Awards such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal (2013), Minister for Veterans Affairs Commendation (2016), and the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers (2018) are a testament to his significant contributions to the community and veterans’ services.
Current Roles: Continuing to Serve
Kenneth Lloyd’s current roles within the military community include membership in the Communications and Electronics Branch Family Senate, sitting on the Board of the Communications and Electronics Branch Museum, and serving as Director and past President of the Friends of HMCS HAIDA and the Hamilton Signals Association. Additionally, he holds key positions as President of both the Toronto Signals Family Council and the 32 Signal Regiment Advisory Council, a registered charity.
