Overview
Special Operations Signalers (SOSIG) are key specialists in CANSOFCOM. SOSIG’s are directly responsible for supporting a vast array of communications systems under demanding circumstances, in close support of CANSOFCOM Operations, both domestically and abroad. Upon completion of the recruiting process selected applicants will be required to complete the SOSIG Course run at the Canadian Special Operations Training Centre (CSOTC). Regardless of occupation (Sig Op, Sig Tech, IS Tech, Line Tech, NAV COMM, Cyber Op and ATIS) all applicants are required to successfully complete the SOSIG-C. Upon completion of SOSIG-C depending on your MOSID you will require additional specialty training to meet additional occupational requirements. SOSIGs need to be physically and mentally fit, maintain a high-readiness posture, and carry a wide variety of skills.
Responsibilities include:
- Support a variety of tactical and strategic communications systems, both domestically and abroad
- Provide support to communication planning and mission analysis
- Working in a variety of environments and conditions
- Employ communications systems used to support all CANSOF operations
- Develop new soldier skills and techniques
- Provide integral close support to CANSOF missions on the objective
- Research new evolving technology and develop a plan on how to incorporate new equipment into CANSOF mission sets.
Work Environment
SOSIGs can be employed within HQ, JTF 2, CSOR, CJIRU, 427 and CSOTC. When in garrison, SOSIGs support their Unit’s operations with support to communications systems, training SOF Professionals, preparing for various missions and maintaining the readiness of deployable communications systems, and integrating new technology in CANSOF operations. When deployed, SOSIGs provide a full spectrum of communications support to Special Operations Assaulters, Special Forces Operators, Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Operators and Tactical Aviation Assets across a wide variety of mission sets.
Selection
Application files will be reviewed by Individual units annually, usually between Jan-Mar. Candidates are boarded against each other with the most suitable candidates selected. The screening process includes:
- Administrative review of Application Documents
- Command Suitability Interview
- Technical SME Interview
- Psychological Testing
