LCol (Honourary Ret’d) Dr. Elsie E. Wayne

23 Aug 16

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Dr. Elsie E. Wayne, wife of Richard Wayne, announces her passing, which occurred at her residence on Tuesday, August 23, 2016. Born in Shediac, NB on April 20, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Paxton and Ada (Estabrooks) Fairweather.
Elsie was a loved and respected former mayor of the city of Saint John, a former member of parliament, and an advocate for good, honest responsible government.

Elsie was an exceptional and wonderful Honourary Lieutenant-Colonel to 722 (Saint John) Communication Squadron (Now 2 Squadron, 37 Signal Regiment) – dedicated, encouraging, supportive, personable, energetic, highly involved and fun. She said many times that the opportunity to serve in uniform as the unit honourary was the proudest and most meaningful professional achievement of her life because as a child, she grew up admiring and respecting the Canadian military when her many older brothers served in WW2.

In addition to her husband, Richard Wayne, Elsie will be missed by her sons, Daniel Wayne (Jane Horgan) of Gagetown, NB and Stephen Wayne (Sandra) of Saint John; two grandchildren, Lindsay and Matthew Wayne; a step-granddaughter, Jennifer Pitaoulis; one sister, Ruth Shaw; as well as a large circle of extended relatives, friends and her beloved community.

She was predeceased by her parents, as well as her siblings, Raymond, Ralph, Lee, Ken and Glen Fairweather and Doreen Ducey.

Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634–7424) with visiting on Thursday, August 25, 2016 from 6 to 8 pm and Friday, August 26, 2016 from 2 to 8 pm. A celebration of Elsie’s life will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 11:00 am from RiverCross Church, 61 Forbes Drive, Saint John, NB.

Interment will take place at Fernhill Cemetery.

For those who wish, remembrances made to RiverCross church building fund would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences may be placed at www.BrenansFH.com
