1. CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER SCOTT TANNER WILL RETIRE FROM THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES ON 18 JUN 2021 AFTER 31+ YEARS OF SERVICE TO QUEEN AND COUNTRY.

2. BORN AT A VERY YOUNG AGE IN LUNENBURG, NOVA SCOTIA, CWO TANNER BEGAN HIS MILITARY CAREER BY ATTENDING CF RECRUIT SCHOOL CORNWALLIS IN THE SUMMER OF 1989. UPON GRADUATION, HE PROCEEDED TO THE CANADIAN FORCES SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS AND ELECTRONICS (CFSCE) TO ATTEND PERFORMANCE ORIENTED ELECTRONIC TRAINING (POET) ON HIS PATH TO BECOME A RADIO TECHNICIAN (RAD TECH). ALONG THE WAY, HE WAS ALSO AN LCIS TECH, ACISS-CST, AND SIG TECH. THE CORPS’ PLAN TO LOSE HIM IN THE TRADE RESTRUCTURES FAILED REPEATEDLY AND, DESPITE BEST EFFORTS, EVENTUALLY HE REACHED THE LOFTY HEIGHTS OF CWO.

3. DURING HIS CAREER IN THE ROYAL CANADIAN CORPS OF SIGNALS, CWO TANNER SERVED IN ALL THE GREAT HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS ACROSS CANADA. HE STARTED IN CORNWALLIS (89), KINGSTON (89-90), GAGETOWN, 5 DIV SUPPORT BASE (90-96), EDMONTON, 1 SVC BN, 3 CDSB, LDSH, 1VP (96-06), PETAWAWA, CSOR (06-08), OTTAWA, CFIOG (08-11), BACK TO PETAWAWA, 2 SIGS FOS (11-13), BACK TO EDMONTON 3 DIV FOS, 3 CDSG SIGS SSM, SECOND LANGUAGE TRAINING (13-18), AND FINALLY BACK TO PETAWAWA ONE LAST TIME AT EFD AND AS OUR BELOVED – HE PAID ME TO SAY THAT – RSM (18-21). ALL IN ALL A VARIED AND ILLUSTRIOUS CAREER CONSIDERING HIS INABILITY TO DO SIMPLE MATH.

4. AS WITH ALL SIGNALLERS, HE MANAGED TO RACK UP MANY DEPLOYMENTS. HE STARTED WITH CFS ALERT (SEP 94-MAR 95) THEN MOVED ON TO THE BALKANS. HE WORKED WITH THE BG IN BOSNIA (JAN/JUL 97) AND LATER WITH NSE (SEP 00-APR 01). AFGHANISTAN SAW HIM DEPLOY ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS (JUN/DEC 07, SEP/OCT 09, OCT/NOV 10, AND FEB/MAR 11).

5. AFTER RETIREMENT FROM THE CAF, CWO TANNER PLANS TO MOVE BACK OUT EAST TO NOVA SCOTIA WITH TRAILER IN TOW TO BE CLOSE TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS. SCOTT ENJOYS CAMPING, READING, WATCHING HIS FOUR GRANDCHILDREN GROW UP, AND LONG WALKS ON THE BEACH. HIS WIFE SANDY HAS PLANS TO HELP HIM CATCH UP ON THE THREE PLUS DECADES OF JOBS HE HAS MANAGED TO SQUIRM OUT OF, AND TO HELP BUILD SOME CALLUSES ON HIS QUOTE DELICATE HANDS END QUOTE.

6. UNFORTUNATELY DUE TO CURRENT PROVINCIAL RESTRICTIONS THERE WILL NOT BE A LARGE GATHERING. A SMALL (COVID SAFE) DWD WILL BE HELD LOCALLY ON 11 JUN 2021 FOR CLOSE FAMILY AND FRIENDS ONLY.

7. CWO TANNER WILL BE SORELY MISSED BY THE SIGNALS COMMUNITY, BUT WE WISH HIM ALL THE BEST IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVOURS. ANY ANECDOTES, STORIES, WELL WISHES, AND EVEN URBAN LEGENDS CAN BE SENT PRIOR TO 11 JUN 2021 TO EITHER [email protected] OR [email protected].
