1. ON 18 JUNE 2020, AFTER 25 YEARS OF LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO CANADA, LIEUTENANT-COLONEL AMUL WARAICH WILL RETIRE FROM THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES.

2. LCOL WARAICH WAS BORN IN NIAGARA FALLS, ONTARIO. AFTER NEARLY 5 YEARS OF POLISHING BOOTS, DOING DRILL, PT, AND SHOOTING WEAPONS AS AN ARMY CADET, HE DECIDED TO DO IT FOR REAL BY JOINING THE CAF IN 1995 UNDER THE ROTP. AFTER BASIC OFFICER TRAINING IN CHILLIWACK HE BEGAN HIS ACADEMIC PREP YEAR AT COLLEGE MILITAIRE ROYAL ST. JEAN, AFTER WHICH HE ATTENDED ROYAL MILITARY COLLEGE OF CANADA KINGSTON, EARNING A BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN COMPUTER ENGINEERING. IN 2000, FOLLOWING HIS SIGNALS OFFICER TRAINING AT CFSCE, HE WAS POSTED TO 1 CANADIAN MECHANIZED BRIGADE GROUP WHERE HE SERVED IN 1 CMBG HEADQUARTERS AND SIGNAL SQUADRON, AND WITH LORD STRATHCONA’S HORSE (ROYAL CANADIANS). IN 2005 HE RETURNED TO CFSCE AS AN INSTRUCTOR BEFORE HEADING TO OTTAWA IN 2006 AS PART OF THE STANDUP OF CANSOFCOM HQ. AFTER PROMOTION TO MAJOR HE WORKED AT CANOSCOM HQ, AND IN 2011 RETURNED AGAIN TO CFSCE TO COMMAND 1 SQUADRON. IN THE YEARS FOLLOWING HE COMPLETED THE JOINT COMMAND AND STAFF PROGRAMME AND EARNED A MASTER OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION. IN 2014 HE WAS POSTED TO CANADIAN ARMY HQ WHERE HE WORKED IN CAPABILITY DEVELOPMENT AND AS G6 OPS/PLANS. HIS CURRENT AND FINAL POSTING WAS TO THE NATO JOINT WARFARE CENTRE, IN STAVANGER, NORWAY. THE HIGHLIGHTS OF HIS CAREER INCLUDE HIS DEPLOYMENTS TO BOSNIA WITH OPERATION PALLADIUM IN 2002 (PSY OPS), TO AFGHANISTAN WITH OP ENDURING FREEDOM IN 2006 (CANSOF SOTF S6), AND SOUTH SUDAN WITH OPERATION SAFARI IN 2010 (UN MILITARY OBSERVER).

3. LCOL WARAICH OWES ALL OF HIS SUCCESSES TO THE SOLDIERS, LEADERS, AND CIVILIAN MEMBERS WITH WHOM HE HAD THE DISTINCT HONOUR TO WORK WITH OVER HIS CAREER.
THE VALUABLE LESSONS HE LEARNED (GOOD AND BAD, EASY AND HARD) DURING HIS CAF JOURNEY HAVE MADE HIM THE OFFICER AND MAN HE IS TODAY, SOMETHING FOR WHICH HE WILL REMAIN FOREVER GRATEFUL.

4. LCOL WARAICH WILL RELEASE IN OTTAWA BUT INTENDS TO MOVE BACK TO NORWAY, AT LEAST FOR A WHILE, WITH HIS BEAUTIFUL WIFE (FABIANA) AND HIS BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER (FREYA), TO UNDERTAKE NEW CHALLENGES WITH NATO AS A NATO INTERNATIONAL CIVILIAN.

5. A LAID BACK DEPART WITH DIGNITY WILL BE HELD IN JUNE 2020 IN STAVANGER, NORWAY. AMUL IS PRETTY SURE HE IS WELL-LIKED BUT DOESN’T EXPECT THAT TOO MANY PEOPLE WILL MAKE THE TRIP ACROSS THE ATLANTIC TO THE SECOND MOST EXPENSIVE COUNTRY ON EARTH TO HAVE LUNCH WITH HIM AT A GOLF COURSE, SO DETAILS OF THAT EVENT WILL BE PROMULGATED LOCALLY. BUT SINCE AMUL WILL BE IN OTTAWA IN MAY TO CONDUCT HIS RELEASE ADMINISTRATION, AN INFORMAL MEET AND GREET WILL BE ARRANGED THERE, PROBABLY AT THE LIEUTENANT’S PUMP ON ELGIN ST IN THE SECOND WEEK OF MAY, IF POSSIBLE BY THEN, WHERE YOU’LL FIND AMUL WITH A DRINK IN HAND IN HOPES TO EXCHANGE GREETINGS, WAR STORIES, AND MORE DRINKS WITH FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES IN THE NCR.
ANECDOTES, STORIES (MOSTLY TRUE), CONGRATULATORY MESSAGES (MOSTLY SINCERE), AND AS MANY PICTURES AS YOU CAN FIND (MOSTLY CLEAN), ARE WELCOME. IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND THE OTTAWA MEET AND GREET, PLEASE RSVP BY EMAIL TO LCOL SCOTT BAKER AT [email protected], AND HE OR AMUL WILL CONTACT YOU ONCE AN EXACT DATE AND TIME ARE ESTABLISHED.
YOU CAN ALSO SEND YOUR MESSAGES AND PICTURES TO LCOL BAKER AT THAT ADDRESS.

Sir, it sounds like you have quite picturesque retirment plans. Wish I could attend. I might have shared some good stories from my time as a candidate at 1 Sqn CFSCE, many years ago, under your command. Those were such memorable times 🙂
It looks like you found true happiness accross the pond. May it be ever lasting!
