1. AFTER 14.8 YEARS OF SERVICE, MAJOR C. CUMBO WILL BE RETIRING ON 6 OCT 2017. HE WOULD HAVE SERVED LONGER, BUT HIS CRA CAUGHT UP WITH HIM. FOR CALOGERO, THE MILITARY WAS A SECOND CAREER. HAVING WORKED AS A COMPUTER ANALYST/PROGRAMMER IN HIS PREVIOUS LIFE, HE THIRSTED FOR ADVENTURE, WHICH HE FOUND AT HOME AND ABROAD.

2. MAJOR C. CUMBO EXPERIENCED MOSTLY HIGHS IN HIS MILITARY LIFE. AFTER SURVIVING BASIC TRAINING IN ST JEAN SUR RICHELIEU IN 2003, HE WAS PROMOTED TO SECOND LIEUTENANT AND WENT ON TO DO SECOND LANGUAGE TRAINING. HE RECALLS THAT TRANSITION AS BEING QUOTE A SUBLIMATION FROM HELL TO HEAVEN UNQUOTE. IN 2004, HE WENT TO THE AEROSPACE TECHNICAL ENGINEERING SUPPORT SQUADRON (ATESS) IN TRENTON TO DO AN ON THE JOB TRAINING STINT, DURING WHICH TIME HE GOT TO RETURN TO HIS FIRST LOVE OF CODING ON THE QUOTE MILLION DOLLAR UNQUOTE PALM TOP RADAR INTERFACE. LATER THAT YEAR, AT THE CF SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS AND ELECTRONICS (CFSCE) AT CFB KINGSTON, HE SUCCESSFULLY REACHED THE OCCUPATIONAL FUNCTIONAL POINT AND WAS PROMOTED TO LIEUTENANT.

3. IN 2005, HE HAD HIS FIRST POSTING WHILE STILL ON IMPOSED RESTRICTION, WHICH OF COURSE WAS TO OTTAWA, WHERE HE WORKED AS THE ACTING SENIOR STAFF OFFICER AND THEN AS THE NUMBER 2 MAN FOR THE DIMEI AND WAS PROMOTED TO CAPTAIN. IN 2006, HE ESCAPED THE CLUTCHES OF THE NCR FOR THE EXCITEMENT OF THE NATO PROGRAMMING CENTRE IN GLONS, BELGIUM, WHERE HE WORKED TO SUPPORT NATO AIR COMMAND AND CONTROL SOFTWARE. MUCH TO THE DELIGHT OFF HIS FAMILY, THEY WERE ALL ABLE TO TAKE IN THE SIGHTS.

4. IN 2008, MAJOR C. CUMBO WAS POSTED TO THE IT WING AT THE NATO AIR BASE IN GEILENKIRCHEN, GERMANY, WHERE HE WORKED TO SUPPORT THE SOFTWARE THAT RUNS ON THE AWACS PLANES. IN 2012, HE WAS POSTED BACK TO ATESS AS THE COMMAND AND CONTROL SYSTEM SOFTWARE OFFICER, MANAGING 18 PROGRAMMERS AND HELP DESK PERSONNEL. IN 2013, ON BEING PROMOTED TO MAJOR, HE WAS POSTED BACK TO OTTAWA TO HELP ON THE SEARCH AND RESCUE MISSION MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE REPLACEMENT PROJECT. THE FOLLOWING YEAR, HE VOLUNTEERED AND WAS ACCEPTED TO DEPLOY ON OP REASSURANCE, BEING CANADA’S SUPPORT TO NATO HE WAS SENT TO THE SUPREME HEADQUARTERS ALLIED POWERS IN EUROPE (SHAPE) HEADQUARTERS IN MONS, BELGIUM, TO AUGMENT THE J6 STAFF ON RETURNING FROM THAT DEPLOYMENT, HE JOINED THE MILITARY PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT CAPABILITY TRANSFORMATION (MPMCT) PROJECT, WORKING FIRST AS A MEMBER OF THE SOLUTIONS TEAM WORKING ON THE NEXT GENERATION PERFORMANCE EVALUATION REPORT PROCEDURE, AND THEN AS THE DATA QUALITY TEAM LEADER.

5. WITH HIS WIFE, CALOGERO WILL BE STAYING IN THE OTTAWA AREA TO PURSUE A THIRD CAREER, DETAILS OF WHICH ARE NOT YET FIRM, BUT WILL PROBABLY INVOLVE DESIGNING A DATABASE OR TWO. CALOGERO AND RENATE HAVE THREE SONS  ALL OF WHOM HAVE FLOWN THE NEST.

6. THE DEPART WITH DIGNITY CELEBRATION WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE RCAF MESS IN THE ASTRA LOUNGE, 158 GLOUCESTER ST, OTTAWA, ON 6 OCT 2017. PRESENTATIONS WILL BEGIN AT 1300H FOLLOWING TGIF.
