Jul 23, 2018 | 1 comment

On 24 May 2018, 18 students graduated from their Communicator Research DP1 course at the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics (CFSCE), Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Kingston. The Canadian Forces Station (CFS) Leitrim Station Commander and Unit Commanding Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Pascal Ouellet was the Reviewing Officer for the parade, escorted by his Station Chief, Chief Warrant Officer Greg Monk. As LCol Ouellet presented the students with their certificates, CWO Monk had the honour of exchanging the students’ cap-badges from the “cornflake” to “Jimmy”, to reflect their transition into the Branch Family and Occupation. In addition, a Top Student Award was presented by Mr. Norm Weir to Private Kennedy for his outstanding achievements and performance in all areas, including dress, deportment, academic excellence, initiative and leadership. To share the celebration of the successes of these students, the families of the graduates were specially invited to participate in the ceremony. LCol Ouellet made a point of recognizing the uniqueness of military life and how each family contributes to mission success. As much as each soldier, sailor and aviator has volunteered to serve, their families have as well. Out of 18 graduates, 3 have been posted to 21 Electronic Warfare Regiment, with […]

HILL 70 MEMORIAL PROJECT

Jul 16, 2018 | 0 comments

Dear Friends of Hill 70, Let me start by thanking all who read this in the dog days of summer for your support in helping achieve the aims of this charity. We have much news of progress on the Hill 70 Memorial Project, so I hope you have time to pour a lemonade and catch up on news of your project. Construction The big news is that our intent to build the walkway that will permit wheelchair access to the Obelisk has been fulfilled. That walkway is quite expensive ($2M) because it contains a trench and a bridge so to provide a gradual rise to the summit. Two major donors have stepped up and the path will be named in honour of Private Frederick Lee, a Canadian of Chinese heritage who was killed in action with the 47 Bn CEF during the Battle of Hill 70. Construction is scheduled to begin very shortly and should be completed by the end of the year. Mr Robert Ho, C.M., OBC, of Vancouver has graciously donated a significant portion of the funds necessary to build the Frederick Lee walkway, and earth moving begins in a matter of days. The stainless-steel cladding has now […]

Some More Branch/Corps Trivia

Jul 10, 2018 | 0 comments

Dear C&E Association Members, I thought I would provide a bit more Branch/Corps Trivia for your reading pleasure. Did you know… Three lakes in the District of Keewatin in the North West Territories have been named officially in recognition of the fact that The Royal Canadian Corps of Signals pioneered the development of the extensive radio communications network serving northern Canada. In March 1958 a picturesque lake some 200 miles southwest of Chesterfield Inlet on Hudson Bay was named “Princess Mary Lake” [our first Colonel-in-Chief], in honour of HRH The Princess Royal and her first visit to the Corps in Canada in 1955. This lake is located at 64° 00′ N, 97° 40′ W. On the occasion of the Corps Diamond Jubilee in 1963, two adjacent lakes were named. “Carruthers Lake” at 62° 32′ N, 100° 20′ W honours Major W.B Carruthers, founder of the Signalling Corps (Militia) in 1903 and “Forde Lake”, at 63° 20′ W, 96° 20′ W, perpetuates the name of Col E. Forde, Chief Signal Officer of the Canadian Corps in the First World War and head of Corps until 1942. Source:  The Royal Canadian Corps of Signals Standing Orders
